Hurricane Katrina threat to MOA Conference

The devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina may have an impact on the MOA’s forthcoming conference, which is/was due to be held in December at Tulane University in New Orleans.

Martyn Thompson, our Tulane host writes:

It is quite probable that the hurricane damage will affect the conference. The levee breaches Lakeside, not riverside, are flooding the whole city. We’ve fled to Memphis. We won’t know when we can return to NO to survey the damage until the breaches have been plugged and the city pumped free of most water. Parts of the city are under martial law. There will be a forced evacuation of the poor, who stayed because they couldn’t leave. Then the looting will stop and all resources will be devoted to damage reduction, clear up and restoration. We don’t know when that will be. Power won’t be back on in the city for at least another 6 weeks, according to the latest, informed, official guess work. It’s a nightmare.

More news will be posted as it becomes available.
